Process of making…

retrieved from 2017

There is a different process of making for every craft which makes it different from the other craft.

Leather craft from Shantiniketan involves cutting of goat leather ,polishing and embossing of leather.Epsom salt a preservative is coated on the leather to inhibit oxidation.Skin is washed intensively and then it is dipped in a wooden pit. After thisit is taken out and is flattened and dried. When the leather is dried ,designs are made on it with the help of some tools. After the making of the final leather ,it is then stitched into the desired product. In the end it is coated with a lacquer finish to make it look shiny.Colour dust is mixed with spirit , used to colour the leather .Now a days block printing is also done on the leather for making batik motifs.

You will get to know more about this craft ,about the motifs and the present day scenarios in my next post.
